It is general information, not medical advice; for emergencies see the emergency numbers.
\n
Where to get help
\n
The Provincial Tourism Office's contact page lists the Siquijor Provincial Hospital, the Provincial Health Office, the provincial disaster office, the provincial police and the Coast Guard as contacts for assistance. The provincial hospital is in Siquijor town; a 2021 news report described an emergency room, operating and delivery rooms and wards among its buildings. Ask the accommodation which facility suits a problem.
\n
The UK Foreign Office warns that many places in the Philippines, including some tourist destinations, lack easy access to emergency care, and advises insurance covering local treatment and evacuation. Dumaguete City, the usual gateway, has several hospitals, listed by Wikivoyage. Folk healing is a cultural tradition with its own guide on this site; as general advice, it is not a substitute for medical care when you are ill.
\n
Heat, drinking water and mosquitoes
\n
PAGASA calls March to May the hot dry season and says temperature and humidity then make conditions especially uncomfortable. When its heat index reaches the \"danger\" band of 42 to 51 °C, the Department of Health warns of heat cramps, exhaustion and stroke and urges drinking clean water, according to GMA News and PNA reports from 2025. The CDC advises eating and drinking regularly, wearing loose, lightweight clothing, limiting exertion and seeking shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
\n
On drinking water, the CDC advises against tap water where it might be contaminated and says sealed bottles are safer; boiling, filtering or chemical treatment can disinfect tap water. The tourism office asks visitors to bring a reusable tumbler and describes single-use plastic as strictly prohibited on the island.
\n
The Foreign Office says mosquito-borne diseases are a year-round risk, with higher dengue risk from June to October. WHO says dengue mosquitoes are active in the daytime and lists covering clothes, repellents with DEET, picaridin or IR3535, screens and nets; the CDC says bites peak in the early morning and late afternoon. WHO advises people with severe symptoms to seek care immediately.
\n
Sea, falls, cliff jumps and caves
\n
Canada's travel advice says coastal waters in the Philippines can be dangerous, riptides are common, several drownings occur each year and lifeguards are usually absent; it advises asking locally before swimming and staying out when red flags fly. The CDC advises against diving into shallow water and care around sea animals such as jellyfish, and the NHS, whose page covers sea urchins, suggests waterproof footwear in rocky shallows and local medical advice after a sting.
\n
The CDC lists leptospirosis, schistosomiasis and melioidosis among Philippine infections spread by contaminated fresh water, mud and floodwater, and advises avoiding swimming in fresh, unchlorinated water such as lakes, ponds and rivers, avoiding floodwater and muddy water, particularly after heavy rain, and covering cuts.
\n
Cambugahay Falls, Salagdoong Beach and Cantabon Cave each have their own guide. Lonely Planet puts the Salagdoong jumping platforms at 6 to 12 m and notes a rope swing and theft at Cambugahay Falls; the tourism office promotes jumping and a rope swing at Lugnason Falls. Travel blogs advise jumping at Salagdoong at high tide, and WHO says studies link the higher drowning rates among males partly to riskier behavior such as swimming alone and drinking alcohol before swimming. Provincial police have said they would keep patrolling busy sites such as Cambugahay Falls. Cantabon Cave is entered with a guide, and showcaves.com calls the tour demanding.
\n
Roads and motorbikes
\n
Canada's advice says fatal scooter accidents involving tourists are common and advises against renting from operators that supply no helmet. The Foreign Office cites poor roads, dangerous driving and weak enforcement, and suggests avoiding night driving. WHO says correct helmet use can reduce the risk of death in a crash by more than six times. Philippine law requires all motorcycle riders, including back riders, to wear a standard helmet (Republic Act 10054) and lets licensed tourists drive for up to 90 days of their stay (Republic Act 4136). Licence rules for foreign riders are for the rental operator and the Land Transportation Office to confirm.
\n
Typhoon season and PAGASA warnings
\n
PAGASA gives June to November as the rainy season and says tropical cyclones form mainly from May to November but sometimes in any month; the country averages 20 typhoons a year. Its Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals run from No. 1 to No. 5, with No. 1 raised up to 36 hours ahead, and its website carries bulletins and sea gale warnings. Canada says ferries may be suspended at short notice when a signal is raised, even in clear weather, possibly leaving travelers stranded for days.
\n
The general safety picture
\n
The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to western and central Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago and against all but essential travel to the rest of Mindanao apart from Camiguin, Dinagat and Siargao. Its safety page also describes high levels of street crime and says terrorist groups have the intent to carry out attacks anywhere in the Philippines. Canada asks for a high degree of caution in the Philippines because of crime, terrorism and kidnapping. Its note on piracy, which concerns attacks on ships in coastal waters, says travelers may face an elevated threat of kidnapping in several waters, including those around Siquijor Island, and that mariners should take appropriate precautions. Advisories change, so check the current entries. The tourism office's reminders for visitors include obeying traffic rules and not leaving valuables unattended.
\n
Before you go
\n
\n
Take insurance that covers medical care, evacuation and, if riding, motorbikes.
\n
Pack a reusable bottle, repellent, sunscreen and water shoes.
\n
Check PAGASA bulletins and leave slack in ferry plans.
\n
Wear a helmet and avoid riding at night or after drinking.
\n
Save the emergency numbers before they are needed.
\n
","featureStartsOn":null,"featureEndsOn":null,"createdByAdministratorId":1,"status":"Published","media":[],"createdAt":"2026-10-20T08:22:56.297Z","updatedAt":"2026-10-20T08:22:55.297Z","deletedAt":null,"defaultImageUrl":"","defaultThumbnailImageUrl":"","defaultMediumImageUrl":"","defaultSmallImageUrl":"","imageUrl":"","excerpt":"This guide covers heat, water, mosquitoes, the sea, roads and storms, and collects what WHO, the US CDC, Philippine agencies and government travel advisories say about each, and where care is…","isFeatured":false,"readingTimeInMinutes":6},"message":"Article retrieved successfully."}
