The Bugwas Festival is San Juan's celebration of its annual town fiesta in honor of the town's patron saint, St. Augustine of Hippo, whose feast day is August 28. The festival was first held in 2006. Festival events fall in the last week of August, so celebrations may begin before the feast day.
Bugwas means a gush of water from the ground. According to the provincial tourism office, the festival symbolizes a fruitful harvest for farmers and a rich catch for fishermen, in a town blessed with abundant spring waters.
Visitor note: the program varies from year to year and is set by the local government and parish, so confirm it locally before planning a visit.
